The Magyars - 830-1000AD
The Magyars originated from the region around the Don River, and just prior to this list were subordinates of the Western Turkish and Khazar Khazar khaganate. Their neighbours were the Early Bulgar and Alans (who only appear as allies in Swords and Scimitars, so there is a lack of a specific Later Alan list) from whom they apparently learned gardening, cattle breeding and agriculture - thus following a chain of technological advancement that would allow them to be the first nation to open a chain of out-of-town garden centers in Civilization IV, the PC game. They frequently quarrelled with the Early Bulgars over where best to site their respective chains of garden centres as well as forming alliances with them - none of which are recognised in the FoG list.
Around 830 a civil war broke out in the Western Turkish and Khazar Khazar khaganate. As a result three Kabar tribes of Khazars joined the Magyars and they moved to territory between the Carpathians and the Dnieper River (today's Ukraine). By 854 the new Magyar nation faced attacks by the Pechenegs, as well as finding themselves the neighbours of the Vikings, Rus and Early Slavic nations. From 862 onwards, the Magyars along with their allies the Kabars started a series of looting raids from the Ukraine towards the Eastern Frankish Early Medieval German Empire and the Great Moravian Kingdom, as well as renewing hostilities with their old friends the Early Bulgars.
In 895/896 ÃrpÃ¡d led some of the Magyars across the Carpathians out of the Ukraine, possibly under pressure from the Pechenegs and Early Bulgars as they had started to interfere in the 894â€“896 ((Early Bulgar-Thematic Byzantine)) war. This was the cause of a very bad day at the office for the Great Moravian army, as the Magyars stole their desks, staplers and a swathe of territory around the upper/middle Tisza river. From there, they intensified their raids across Europe before moving on again to to take the lands of the Early Slavic tribes, who then disappeared from history.
In 907, the Magyars destroyed an Early Medieval German Bavarian army at Pozsony, opening up the lands of the Early Medieval Germans, Early Medieval French and the rest of Europe to Magyar raids. The Magyars defeated Louis the Child's Imperial Early Medieval German Army near Augsburg in 910, and from 917 to 925 raided through Basle, Alsace, Burgundy, Saxony, and Provence. Magyar expansion was finally checked at the Battle of Lechfeld in 955 when Otto The Great the Early Medieval German Emperor managed to beat the Magyar Light Horse by catching them with his armoured cavalry lancers. The Magyars eventually settled down when the Pope agreed that they coudl stay, and when their own leaders accepted Christianity leading to the coronation of Stephen I the Saint (Szent IstvÃ¡n) as King of Hungary in 1001, changing the list into the Early Hungarians.
- Like other shooty cavalry armies, your battle plan is usually to stake out as much ground as possible to block enemy Second Moves, at least in some sectors, and leave ample manoeuvre room behind your lines. Getting first move is very helpful so losing the PBI roll is preferred by some players, although your tough Cv may be willing to face the enemy in close combat, so its therefore less critical to keep lots of manoeuvre room to the rear.
- Sometimes you are lucky and the enemy deploys with a hanging flank you can readily outwing and envelop, or a good flank march opportunity presents itself, but often the terrain and enemy dispositions limit you to a frontal approach of disrupting, loosening and disjointing the enemy line of battle with shooting, threats, and uncontrolled enemy charges in order to expose gaps, flanks and other weak spots you then exploit with concentrated shooting or timely charges
- Destroy or flee enemy Skirmishers, draw their mounted and aggressive foot away from their other troops by skirmishing - he will have to charge shooters to reduce their effect - pick off isolated detachments, and provoke charges where possible. Work around his flank and hunt his BG count filler such as Mobs and LF.
- Ultimately your cavalry will need to be the ones to win the battle for you by running down your opponents - remember this and don;t expect your LH to do all the work in eroding enemy morale and competence to breaking point.
- One common mistake with all Shooty cavalry is to take advantage of the possibility evade too often - superior armoured cavalry swordsmen are still very potent combat troops against most enemies, and it is often better to advance in 2 ranks (inflicting more shooting as a result) and take on any enemies in hand to hand combat.
- The time to commit is once an enemy has gone disrupted, or if they have lost bases - waiting and skirmishing in the hope they go fragmented may well be gilding the lilly.

Realistically you are looking at using Gothic/Avar type figures for this army, mixed in with Mongols from the Ilkhanid Mongol page. There are plenty of manufacturers with such ranges. You can see some of the figures in the Photo Gallery also on this site
