Game 2, off the back of a narrow yet nearly decisive win, and the Covenanters were unbroken. Next up, the proper Royalists

The lists for the Scots Covenanters and Later Royalist from this game, as well as all the other lists from the games at Oxford can be seen here in the FoG:R Wiki.

Yet again the pre-set terrain was terrible for a game supposed to be played in under 3 hours, so much so that Lynette and I agreed to ignore two of the larger and more badly placed pieces entirely and pretend they weren't there!

This large marsh, and the even larger village in the distance both did not exist in our version of reality, and so on a fairly open plain with some large spots of RGo (whic I think we agreed also to play as Uneven) the Covenanters and King-supporters faced off

Sing along if you wish..

My flank march was due to arrive on the left, but the Royalists had deployed very little there apart from the obligatory Dragoons - they raced forward, giving themselves more room to fall back...

The Royalists were advancing slowly and carefully out of the illusary town, keeping a nice neat line with the use of my not-quite-renaissance era .

Suddenly the flank march arrived early doors - and the 2 units of dragoons attempted to look a little scared, but with such a lot of rough terrain around they were actually not that worried

The Covenanter plan was starting to take shape as the checkerboard of infantry advanced slowly and swung round on the end of the Royalist line, with the light gunne "frames" well positioned to add supporting fire

28mm frame gunnes.

With the Royalists having released their reserve Cavaliers to check the advance of the flank march, some of the sub-standard Covenanter cavalry had to sneak into the middle of their infantry to protect themselves

FoGR, ECW - The Great Rebellion: Peter Pig Scots Covenanters vs Later Royalist, 15mme

The Royalist plan was solid - form a big line and wait for me to attack. The Covenanters were hoping that their gunnes would chip away at the Royalists, and had also placed their lone unit of Wild Highlanders in the middle of the line where they were facing off against some Shotte-only units, which would allow them to in turn count the +1 for their swords in melee. The crap lancers were also praying, but this time that the Pike and Shotte on the end of the Royalist line failed a shooting cohesion test and became unprotected, making them a nice lancer target

Some of the Royalists, borrowed from Instant Armies & Veteran Miniatures collection of "miniatures for sale at a show near you soon" were especially well painted

Very nice detail on a black undercoat for these Essex figures.

Yes, this is 15mm...

The Covenanters may have been jealous of the painting and uniforms, but at least some of my troops had more than 3 figures per base!

The Cavalier horse were equally impressive, and against my Average Unarmoured Horse they were also impressive in combat too

One of the advantages of a 2 and 3/4 hour game length is that it really encourages you to throw in the Generals - here the two lines clash and even the Great Commander is in combat (with one commander being in the wrong place due to arriving with the flank march, the GC was sort of needed I'm afarid.)

FoGR, ECW - The Great Rebellion: Peter Pig Scots Covenanters vs Later Royalist, 15mme

With both sides having taken losses from shooting earlier, the combat was quick and bloody, with units removed on both sides leaving huge gaps in the middle of the two lines.

28mm Montrose Irish.

The pretty weak right flank of the Covenanter army was also starting to cave in when time was called, leaving the Royalists with a 13-7-ish win.

Post Match Summary from the Scots Covenanters Commander

Yet again our brave laddies stood firm in their fashionable grey coats and despite their tiny stature they managed to hold on against the larger, but less figures per base Royalist infantry with resolution and courage

The challenges faced by the flank march are starting however to become apparent, with little that they seemingly can do once they arrive on the table. This is an unexpected development, possibly caused by not having every tried this particular tactic with these troops ever before I fear

At least some of the eye candy on the other side was spectacular in this game, and I hope that we will see more of the same in future.

Hoots mon, where's me troosers!
