Historical Overview Section

Granda was the last remaining enclave of the Moslem Conquest in Spain, ruled from 1228 by the Nasrid Dynasty. With the Reconquista in full swing after the conquest of Cordoba in 1236, the Nasrids aligned themselves with Ferdinand III of Castile, officially becoming a tributary state in 1238. The state officially became the Kingdom of Granada in 1238 and Granada was held as a vassal to Castile for many decades, and provided trade links with the Muslim world, particularly the gold trade with the sub-saharan areas south of Africa. The Nasrids also provided troops for Castile while the kingdom was also a source of mercenary fighters from North Africa. On January 2, 1492, the last Muslim leader, Muhammad XII, known as Boabdil to the Spanish, surrendered complete control of Granada, to Ferdinand and Isabella, Los Reyes Católicos ("The Catholic Monarchs"), after the city was besieged.

Using the army in FoG

  • Not really one of the greatest armies in FoG, with few really decent troop types in it.
  • The 4 Christian knights and 8 Arab lancers look to be almost mandatory, and arguably 2x6 spearmen too, although it may be cheaper to take them as Poor and support them with a unit of crossbowmen.
  • Handgunners and slingers in 4's or 6's also help boost the army size too
  • In Storm of Arrows themed competitions most other armies haven´t got many skirmishers so you can take loads of LH and LF and shoot often at troops who can't catch you.
  • It is hard to see a meaningful role for large numbers of MF crossbowmen in any army, although a few 8's will work wonders to support your light horse especially on a flank where decent foot will be rare. Taking lots of LF with crossbow may be better, and either type will scare most mounted.
  • 4 Knights and 8 lancer cavalry is almost a half decent strike force, especially if the rest of the army has so many skirmish units it can't be broken.
  • BGs of 6 LH may be the best way to get bang for buck from these sub-optimum troops.
  • A deployment that alternates Knights/Lancers and Crossbows may not be a bad choice against enemy LH/Cv. It lets you deploy knights with some ranks in reserve with the gaps filled with Xbows to help chase away (or at least make life challenging) skirmishing enemy

15mm Manufacturers supplying "arab-type" figures maybe suitable for this army

You can see some of the figures in the Ancients Photo Gallery also on this site.
