Historical Overview Section
By AD 43, the time of the main Roman invasion of Britain, Britain had already frequently been the target of invasions, planned and actual, by forces of the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. Between 55 BC and the 40s AD, the status quo of tribute, hostages, and client states without direct military occupation, begun by Caesar's invasions of Britain, largely remained intact. In 43 a more serious invasion was launched by Claudius with 4 full legions and continued by his successors in a series of campaigns running to 96AD - including putting down Boudiccas rebellion. The invasion finally petered out with large parts of Scotland unconquered, leading the the building of Hadrians Wall.
Using the army in FoG
- Like many similar armies, the Brits present many challenges to the FoG general. The common theory is either to major on chariotry, or to have massed attacks of deep formations to try and overwhelm the flanks of your enemy, as the fairly brittle and "protected" MF brits are going to struggle to stand up to a protracted fight against most in-period opponents main foot (legions or pikes).
- Having the IC can help make your units stand up much better in combat, giving you more time for your chariotry to win on an open flank.
- The army doesnt need too much terrain as the infantry are going to struggle to stand up to many contemporary opponents and you need room for the chariots to beat enemy mounted
- Chariots are not wonder weapons, but they can beat the type of JLS/Sw cavalry seen in many in-period armies if they can gain overlaps.
- The Soldurii as Elite seem a bit of a no-brainer - being protected, they will often be down in melee against armoured troops, and so its one of the few times Elite is worthwhile. They can even just about afford to deploy 1 deep against shooting armies, and act as a suicide skirmish screen that can also perhaps do some damage to the enemy !
Allied Contingents
- Roman, Prinicipate : Date restrictions None Book: Legions Triumphant Page: 6 - 4 legions, 4 auxilia, 4 cavalry as a minimum make this expensive but tough - and all 3 are useful. Make the legions and cavalry as good as you can afford if you are taking them, and don’t be distracted with the other optoinal troops. Adding LF to legion and Auxilia BG

- This is a lot easier to do than easier than setting up tables
- For FoG I suggest listing your army in order or march
- with troop desctiptions on each line, for example
- 4 HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen
- 8 LG Undrilled Unarmoured Poor Bowen
- Dont forget to include your Generals !!!

UK Bookstore
You can make the bookstore show only the books for the army you are setting up the page for. You need to change the line above where it says "node=0"by replacing the number "0" with the right code. You can find that by going to the Bookshop page, navigating to the right page, and holding your mouse over link to that army on the right hand menu. The node number you need to replace "0" with will show up in the bar at the bottom of your screen! Don't worry if you can't find it - I'll get round to sorting it out eventually |
