Wargamers Island Books

With Jez Evans

Jez Evans is a Professional Northerner and Loud Shirt Wearer of the Highest Order. Single-handedly responsible for proving that Greek Hoplite Armies were a viable option in both in-period and open DBM competitions, he has had the rare honour of having an entire strategy named after him - the "Jez Evans Wall-o-Spear". These are Jez's 10 favorite books listed below. The links go directly to the UK or US Amazon pages where you can find out more about each one.

How did you get into wargaming ?

I was introduced by a school friend, starting with Airfix Napoleonics and Bruce Quarries " Napoleons Campaigns in Miniature"

What was your first army, and where are they now ?    First army was (not unsurprisingly British Airfix Napoleonic. My first ancient army was Atlantic Egyptians.

What's your favorite army and/or set of figures in your possession, and why?   The Greeks. Obviously!

1. Dune

An absolute SF classic, well written and quite different to anything else.

2. The Honor Harrington series by David Weber

Would really recommend these to any gamer - an excellent series of SF books.

3. Commando books.

I started collecting these back in 1972. There were 4 every two weeks = a lot

4. Any book published by Janes

I like the techie side of modern warfare. Janes are the definitive source

5. Battletech

I like the game - and the novels too.

6. Gunpowder God, by H Beam Piper.

The first alternative history book - very good classic science fiction.

7. Conan by  Robert E Howard

I have always liked Robert E Howard's books. The Conan stories are not his best stuff but are the most well known.

8. Legend by David Gemmel.

Excellent read good character and the hero dies too..

9. The Asterix books by Goscinny & Uderzo.

I've liked these since I was little, they are funny even now!

10. The Horseclans by Robert Adams.

Tacky fantasy - but an easy read!
