Historical Overview Section

C7BC to just after 279BC
There were two defining wars of the Classical era. The Persian Wars (500–448 BC) where Ionian Greek cities revolted against the Persian Empire supported by mainland cities led by Athens. Notable battles of this war include Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. In 458 BC, while the Persian Wars were still ongoing war broke out between the Athenians and Sparta (and both parties allies) turning in 431 BC into the Peloponnesian War. After decades of sieges and land and naval battles Sparta came out on top but discontent with Spartan hegemony let to war with Thebes who crushed Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. In 346 BC however the rising power of Macedon quickly conquered the exhausted cites of Greece.

Using the Army in FoG

  • Its quite hard to get away from the idea of taking your 800 or 900 point total, deducting points for your generals and other compulsaries, and then dividing the remainder by the price of your cheapest hoplite! The Poor foot and mob are useful though to bulk out the army - but dont get tempted to use either of them against anything that can possibly catch you or its just throwing away APs.
  • The choice is often between a high quality Spartan-led force, or a lower quality larger force that will still probably struggle to fill the table. One other choice point is the IC (or not). With an IC you may be able to gain added tactical flexibility by grouping your hoplites in 6's, but without you may well need to go for 8's to give them more staying power against massed shooting.
  • Taking the slightly earlier list with armoured hoplites has a definate advantage over the merely protected ones - meaning you can be up in melee against most other armoured troops provided you retain cohesion at impact. It also allows you to form up in a very thin formation against enemy light horse, as even at 6 bases wide taking 6 shots, it is still hard for LH to consistently do 3 hits against you (to give you a -1 in the cohesion test).

If using Spartans

  • don't take too many Spartans or you will be too small at 800 AP or even 900
  • take some protected hoplites as well to save on points
  • take a mix of drilled and undrillled.
  • drilled on the wings and undrilled in the centre
  • take heaps of LF in 8s to absorb missile fire on your Bgs of 6 and to fill Difficult
  • don't take an IC - The bulk of your army is armoured and you need to move first
  • don't be afraid to spread out one deep in some places. Its fairly easy to contract but much harder to expand.

Allied Contingents

  • Greek, Classical Dates: Any Book: Immortal Fire Page: 4 - Well, with only 2 sub generals allowed you may have to take a Greek ally. Spartan or Thessalian give you something different to vanilla Greeks

Collecting and Painting the army

  • There are few citystates who had specific devices. The Club of Hercules for the Theban Sacred Band and Lamda for Spartiates are about it.
  • Subsequent to that each person would pick their own device usually to a favoured deity or mythical beastie.
  • The Corinthian helmet is so named because it was found in the area of Corinth. It could have actually been worn by an invader!
  • Poseidon (Neptune in Latin) was considered Corinths city deity while Athena was for Athens, so a smattering of such shield patterns, (e.g. a trident for Poseidon or an owl for Athena) could be an easy way to differentiate units if mixed in with other general patterns for best effect.

Name of Army / Date

  • Using asterisks inthe edit mode creates a bulleted list in the actual site
  • This is a lot easier to do than easier than setting up tables
  • For FoG I suggest listing your army in order or march
  • with troop desctiptions on each line, for example
  • 4 HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen
  • 8 LG Undrilled Unarmoured Poor Bowen
  • Dont forget to include your Generals !!!

Include any notes you want here, including comments on how to use - or play against - the army.
