WAR OF THE LEAGUE OF AUGSBURG ANGLO-DUTCH

Historical Overview

The Grand Alliance was a European coalition, consisting (at various times) of Austria, Bavaria, Brandenburg, the Dutch Republic, England, the Holy Roman Empire, Ireland, the Palatinate of the Rhine, Portugal, Savoy, Saxony, Scotland, Spain and Sweden. The organization, which was founded in 1686 as the League of Augsburg, was known as the "Grand Alliance" after England joined the League (in 1689). It was originally formed in an attempt to halt Louis XIV of France's expansions.

In the 1980's lots of people had been getting a bit worried that English King James II was becoming a bit, too, well, "French" and so when the Dutch king(ish) William landed his forces at Torbay on 5 November 1688, many welcomed him with open arms, and revolution that shortly followed to end James II's reign. Few people in England suspected that William's aim was to bring England into the war against France on the Dutch side.

James II fled to (guess where..?) France and in March 1689 (supported by French gold, troops, and generals) he sailed to rally Catholic support in Ireland as a first step to regaining his throne. James II's initial aim was to pacify the northern Protestant strongholds however, his ill-equipped army of around 40,000 could do little more than besiege Londonderry unsuccessfully. Meanwhile Williamite forces were being supplied from the north, and in August the Duke of Schomberg arrived with 15,000 Danish, Dutch, Huguenot, and English reinforcements. In June 1690 William III landed in Ireland with a further 15,000 men and with these reinforcements William III secured decisive victory over James at the Battle of the Boyne on 1 July, and once again forced James II to flee back to France.

William III now felt confident enough to return to the Continent at the beginning of 1691 to command the coalition army in the Low Countries. By seeking refuge in France and subsequently invading Ireland, James II had given William III the ideal instrument to convince the English parliament that entry into a major European war was unavoidable. With the support of Parliament, William III declared war on France on 17 May 1689. Everyone else in Europe then piled in, as they clearly hadn't had enough of a ruck in the Thirty Years War and so everyone invented the rather more efficient Nine Years' War which mainly took place round France's borders: in the Spanish Netherlands; the Rhineland; Catalonia; and Piedmont-Savoy.

Tactics

  • This is the "shooting" army of choice
  • Huge amounts of Superior troops make even the MF-only units reasonably charge proof against mounted opponents
  • Little guns make up for any shortfall in shooting capacity for the 5+1 units
  • You are going to be in a shooting match in period, so consider an IC, and use the 4 Horse as rear support for almost all of the army
