SCOTS ROYALIST

SCOTS ROYALIST

Historical Overview

The army operates in 2 distinct eras, a crap one and a good one..

The Crap one is in 1639, under the Marquess of Huntly.otherwise known as George Gordon, The 2nd Marquess of Huntly (1592 – March 1649), eldest son of George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly by Lady Henrietta Stewart, daughter of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox.

He brought up in England as a Protestant, and later created Viscount Aboyne by Charles I. On succeeding to his father's title his influence in Scotland was employed by the king to balance that of Argyll in the dealings with the Covenanters, but without success. In the First Bishops' War (1639) a series of minor engagements between Covenanters and Scottish royalist forces took place in Aberdeenshire. The first was a confrontation at the small town of Turriff called the "Raid of Turriff" at which no blood was shed.2 The next was the siege of Towie Barclay Castle, in which one person was shot - the very first casualty of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.3 This was followed by two minor engagements known as the "Trot of Turriff" and the battle of the Brig o' Dee to the south of Aberdeen.4 However, as neither of the main armies wanted to fight, a settlement called the Pacification of Berwick was reached in June.

In the civil war proper Huntly distinguished himself as a royalist, and in 1647 was excepted from the general pardon; in March 1649, having been captured and given up, he was beheaded by order of the Scots parliament at Edinburgh.

The Good one was in 1644-45 with James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose (25 October 1612 – 21 May 1650) who was a Scottish nobleman and soldier, who initially joined the Covenanters in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, but subsequently supported King Charles I as the English Civil War developed. From 1644 to 1646, and again in 1650 he fought a civil war in Scotland on behalf of the King and is generally referred to in Scotland as simply the Great Montrose

In this eras Montrose's trick was that he knew that many of the West Highland clans, who were largely Catholic, detested Argyll and his Campbell clansmen, none more so than the MacDonalds who with many of the other clans rallied to his summons. The Royalist allied Irish Confederates sent 2000 disciplined Irish soldiers led by Alasdair MacColla across the sea to assist him. In two campaigns, distinguished by rapidity of movement, he met and defeated his opponents in six battles. At Tippermuir and Aberdeen he routed Covenanting levies; at Inverlochy he crushed the Campbells, at Auldearn, Alford and Kilsyth his victories were obtained over well-led and disciplined armies.

The fiery enthusiasm of the Gordons and other clans often carried the day, but Montrose relied more upon the disciplined infantry from Ireland. His strategy at Inverlochy, his tactics at Aberdeen, Auldearn and Kilsyth furnished models of the military art, but above all his daring and constancy marked him out as one of the greatest soldiers of the war. His career of victory was crowned by the great Battle of Kilsyth on 15 August 1645

Tactics

  • The army gets loads of interesting foote - use them all in their correct places and it can be dangerous.
  • 1645 looks like a good date, as then you get the two Superior units
  • Dont dismiss Bowmen, they come in big units and can cause cohesion tests on the enemy. And as they are generally Warriors or Swordsmen, a DISR Pike and shot unit is easy pickings for an 8-strong Warrior/Swordsmen unit

The Poor pike are of course all used for rear support, and minimal horse are taken as they are outclassed by other ECW Horse anyway. The IC should mean that all shooting tests are taken at +3 (before any shooting modifiers are used) so the army hopefully can get into contact relatively intact.

This list is tailored for playing Caroline English (all Pike and Shotte basically) in a game where a 24-1 result was needed to progress to the following round. The three units of Highlanders are just about big enough to survive (and often avoid) shooting-related tests, and the Light Lancer Horse are there to scare away the Caroline English Carbine/Pistol horse. The CinC is a TC so he can go into combat (all combats being "must-win") and hopefully large unit sizes + rear support from the poor troops will mean the army gets into combat relatively unscathed anyway even without an IC.
