MARATHA

Historical Overview

The Maratha Empire or the Maratha Confederacy was an Indian imperial power that existed from 1674 to 1818. At its peak, the empire covered much of India. The Marathas were a yeoman warrior group from the western Deccan that rose to prominence during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty and Ahmadnagar Sultanate. The empire was founded and consolidated by Chhatrapati ("Emperor") Shivaji Bhosle, who created an independent empire with Raigad as its capital and successfully fought against the Mughal Empire. The Maratha Empire waged war for 27 years with the Mughals from 1681 to 1707 which became the longest war in the history of India. Shivaji pioneered "Shiva sutra" or Ganimi Kava (guerrilla tactics), which leveraged strategic factors like demographics, speed, surprise and focused attack to defeat his bigger and more powerful enemie

Tactics

  • Unusual for both HF spearmen and musket-armed troops in this book, making using large numbers of both very tempting
  • The weakness of the army is the relative lack of decent Superior troops - the unarmoured lancers are particularly vulnerable to the typical Armoured Bw/Sw cavalry who predominate in other armies of this book, losing in sustained melee and being often a POA down in shooting.
  • The large blocks of HF will be hard for anyone to wear down by attrition, so they do need rear support and possibly and IC to avoid failing any rare cohesion tests caused by enemy shooting.
  • Using the musketeers looks good on paper, but with Warriors (who move 4") being a common troop type in this book the advantages of shooting 6" are rather less than in more traditiona periods where 3" move troops are the norm
  • Engage the enemy with big blocks of spear, then move up the warrior musketeers or bowmen to provide overlaps at ++ POAs
  • The large proportion of unarmoured average troops mean this army will take casualties, so get as many BGs as possible
