This list portrays the Portuguese armies that reclaimed PortugalĀ“s independence from the Spanish, which they had lost for 60 years. Following the initial proclamation of independence in 1640, and the initial battles, Spanish resources were stretched to the limit until the peace of the Pyrenees in 1659, after which they concentrated efforts in reclaiming Portugal, which meant that it would take another 9 years, and 4 major battles (Elvas 1659, Estremoz 1663, Castelo Rodrigo 1664, Montes Claros 1665) for Spain to formally recognize PortugalĀ“s Independence at the Peace Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, thus ending the 28 years of war. This covers the Portuguese armies during that period.
