LATER EIGHTY YEARS WAR DUTCH

LATER EIGHTY YEARS WAR DUTCH

Overview

The Eighty Years' War, or Dutch War of Independence, (1568–1648) began as a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II King of the Later Imperial Spanish and the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.

After the initial stages Philip II deployed his armies and regained control over most of the rebelling provinces. However, under the leadership of the exiled William of Orange the northern provinces continued their resistance and managed to oust the Spanish armies, and established the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The subsequent war continued, although the heartland of the republic was no longer threatened. The war ended in 1648 with the Peace of Münster when the Dutch Republic was recognised as an independent country.

Tactics

  • A pretty vanilla army, with not quite enough Cuirassiers to tempt you to use it as a Cuirassier-led army list, but with decent balance as a result
  • Three superior arquebus 6-packs in the pre-1610 iteration is quite strong, but in (pre musket) themes they may come unstuck against Superior Tercios and Kiels which do the same thing but with more staying power
  • 6 artillery is really the USP of the list, allowing a defensive posture to be taken.
  • If so, the 2-strong dragoon unit needs to be used cautiously and never really put at risk, as it's the only thing that can really slow an advancing enemy
  • The Swedish ally in 1633 gives another dimension, but even as Det Hse, Armoured Pistol/Pistol isn't that exciting when the typical opponents may be heavily armoured.
  • You can always take a ship or two. But there is not much else to use by the waterway even if you get it.
